Causes
The battle of Ortona was a Canadian conquest to capture the city of Ortona from German and Italian forces. Canada was on the offensive with the intention of acquiring Ortona as a port. Ortona was Italy's only deep water port, gaining control of it would allow Allie forces to attain supplies quicker, by taking a shorter root than they were currently forced to. Capturing Ortona was also vital in clearing the path to other Allie target cities. The battle of Ortona was part of a campaign to break though the German Winter Line, a line of defense protecting the rest of Italy.
